2025
  • SUMA was honoured as an ‘Trusted Brand - Environment’, a choice made by the public that reflects the recognition and credibility it has gained among the population over the course of its career.
2024
  • Mota-Engil acquired the whole of SUMA in the following segments: urban waste collection and treatment services, and public cleaning, including the international activity of subsidiaries in Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Oman, having sold the industrial waste business to the previous shareholder URBASER.
2023
  • SUMA was voted ‘Trusted Brand - Environment’ for the seventh consecutive year.
  • SUMA was awarded two prizes at the ‘Mota-Engil Innovation Awards’ event for its ‘SUMA in the Neighbourhood’ and ‘GISUMA’ technological applications.
  • Participation of ECOVISION (SUMA subsidiary) in the ‘ISWA 2023 World Congress’
2022
  • Maintenance of the triple certification in Quality (NP EN ISO 9001:2015), Environment (NP EN ISO 14001:2015), and Safety and Health at Work (NP ISO 45001:2019), awarded to SUMA's headquarters and service centre in Aveiro.
  • For the 6th consecutive year, SUMA was voted ‘Trusted Brand - Environment ’ by the public, which attests to its recognition and credibility among the population.
  • Inauguration of SUMA Brazil's new headquarters in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, at an event marked by the presence of SUMA's CEO, Manuel Costa.
2021
  • Acquisition and presentation of natural gas-powered fleets in Figueira da Foz and Coimbra.
  • Launch of the new SUMA website.
  • Fifth consecutive award as ‘Trusted Brand - Environment’, demonstrating the importance of the services provided to the population.
2020
  • Pioneering the integration of compulsory use of helmets, reinforcing safety for all workers who work in the stirrups of vehicles.
  • Mitigation measures under COVID-19: creation of safety protocols and distribution of PPE; where possible, implementation of teleworking on a rota basis; creation of reserve teams; and facilitating access to tests and online consultations.
  • Change of name of the subsidiary for the Brazilian market to SUMA Brasil, in order to align it with the corporate group.
  • SUMA was chosen as the ‘Trusted Brand- Environment 2020'.
2019
  • Celebration of SUMA's 25th anniversary at the Monastery of Batalha.
  • Provision of technical consultancy services in the field of environmental education in Oman.
  • Recognised with the international award for business excellence as ‘Best Management & Collection Company - Portugal’.
  • SUMA was chosen as the ‘Trusted Brand - Environment’ for the third year running.
2018
  • Renewal of waste collection and urban cleaning fleets in the centre of the country, corresponding to an investment of more than 6.5 million euros.
  • Beginning of door-to-door awareness-raising activities in seven municipalities under Lipor's influence.
  • SUMA was chosen as a ‘Trusted Brand - Environment 2018’, reinforcing the recognition of the previous year.
2017
  • Inauguration of the new non-hazardous waste treatment centre in Azambuja, managed by TRIAZA, at a ceremony presided over by the Secretary of State for the Environment.
  • SUMA's election as ‘Trusted Brand - Environment 2017’, voted by the public, attests to its recognition and credibility among the population.
  • Inauguration of the ZOOURBANIDADE® mobile awareness unit, which explores the demand for citizenship in the use of public space and facilities.
2016
  • Start of environmental education services in the EGF universe.
  • Renewal of the contracts for Batalha, Alcobaça and Ourém, surpassing more than two decades of continuous service in these municipalities.
  • Launch of the interactive online platform for providing environmental awareness content and games, ‘Animals of the City’.
2015
  • ECOVISION was awarded a contract to collect waste, operate and maintain two landfills in Al Sharqiya South for a period of seven years, consolidating its presence in Oman.
  • Extension of CONSITA's activity to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, surpassing the milestone of one million inhabitants served in Brazil.
  • Launch of ECO KIOSKO - an innovative structure designed to disseminate good citizenship practices in a commercial and cultural context.
  • Installation of the SUMAKids interactive platform - an online space for democratising environmental education content.
2014
  • Acquisition of Empresa Geral de Fomento (EGF), the holding company that manages 11 multi-municipal waste treatment systems.
  • Start of business in the Middle East - Sultanate of Oman - through the subsidiary ECOVISION.
  • Re-entry into the Brazilian market through the Brazilian company CONSITA.
  • Inauguration of the first waste oil regeneration plant in Portugal, in Chamusca, by ENVIROIL.
  • Dissemination of environmental awareness content in a television context, in the MEO Kids interactive application.
2013
  • Start of operations of solid waste collection and public cleaning in Sumbe, capital of South Kwanza - Angola.
  • Start of solid waste collectionin services in Maputo, through ECOLIFE, SUMA's company for the Mozambican market.
  • SUMA distinguished for its work in Risk Management with the "Special Trust" award, an iniciative by Açoreana Risk Management / Diário Económino Awards.

  • AGIR starts operations of solid waste collection in Cidade da Praia, Cape Verde.
2011
  • A 25% increase in SUMA's Turnover due to international activity.
  • VISTA WASTE was recognised as ‘Best International Participation’ at the 1st International Environment Fair in Angola.
2010
  • Launch of ECOSCÓPIO®, a new format of mobile awareness unit aimed at  young people.
  • Launch of ECOMACHIMBA in Angola - a mobile awareness unit for all ages.
2009
  • Acquisition of CORREIA & CORREIA, ENVIROIL, TRANSPORLIXOS and EKOSRODOWISKO.
  • Establishment of RIMA, a subsidiary company responsible for managing the Lustosa non-hazardous industrial waste landfill.
  • Implementation of GiSUMA - an integrated system for consulting and editing geographic information.
  • Inauguration of the environmental education centre in Luanda and extension of the services provided in Angola to Benguela province.
  • Recognition of SUMA as an ‘Exemplary Management Company’ (‘The 1000 Largest Companies of 2008’, DN, November 2009).
2008
  • Start of the internationalisation project - signing contracts in the areas of MSW collection, urban cleaning and environmental education - in the Province of Luanda (Angola).
  • The SUMA headquarters and Aveiro service centre were awarded triple certification in quality, environment and safety - NP EN 14001:2004 and NP 4397:2001/OHSAS 18001:1999.
  • Acquisition of TRIU by incorporation.
  • Launch of CIDADÓMETRO® - a mobile awareness-raising unit aimed at families.
2007
  • Acquisition of NOVAFLEX and subsidiaries - REAL VERDE and NOVA BEIRA.
  • Extension of CITRUP's certification to social responsibility - SA 8000 standard.
  • CITRUP was awarded the EcoPME prize, which honours companies' eco-efficiency and sustainability policies.
2006
  • Certification of SUMA headquarters and Aveiro service centre under NP EN ISO 9001:2000.
  • Accreditation of SUMA by the Institute for Quality in Training.
2005
  • Launch of the 1st Solidarity Mobile Unit - REUTILÂNDIA®, a project that combines the environmental principles of reuse and sustainability with those of solidarity.
  • Certification of the Riba d'Ave Urban Solid Waste Treatment Plant (ETRSU) - NP EN ISO 9001:2000.
2004
  • Awarded 1st place in the National Environmental Innovation Prize, with the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic, to the SUMA- VLE equipment (vehicle for washing ecopoints and underground containers).
2003
  • Integration of the companies STL and UTIL into SUMA, which strengthens competences, expands the geographical scope of operations and consolidates leadership of the sector in Portugal.
  • Covering 2 million inhabitants served by waste collection and urabana cleaning.
  • Accreditation of the analysis laboratory (SUMALAB) by NP EN ISO / IEC 17025.
2002
  • Launch of SUMA's mobile training unit to fulfil the annual plans in this area.
2001
  • Incorporation of SERURB - one of the largest national companies in the waste sector. The synergies between the two largest national companies in the waste sector allow them to gain size and complement each other's expertise.
  • Launch of a pioneering project in the field of environmental education - LIXOTECA® Itinerante, comprising the conversion of public transport vehicles into mobile awareness-raising units, aimed at younger audiences, particularly primary school age groups.
2000
  • Selection of SUMA by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to manage the selective collection and cleaning of the interior and exterior spaces of the headquarters of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union - PORTUGAL 2000.
1998
  • Application of an exemplary urban cleaning model - EXPO' 98: the last world exhibition of the 20th century, held in Lisbon's Parque das Nações.
1996
  • First contract for selective collection begins. SUMA starts managing systems for the collection and recovery of solid urban waste in Aveiro.
