SUMA’s Board of Directors is committed to creating value in the environmental and sustainability sector.
The commitment to developing the waste sector, both in technological terms and with regard to valorization – through the application of the best environmental practices, safe performance, the use of innovation, and the commitment of a specialized and dedicated workforce – has enabled SUMA to maintain its position as a benchmark in Portugal and in the international markets in which it operates, and its performance is recognized by certification in the areas of quality, environment and safety.
Three decades of experience, guided by a focus on emerging public utility needs and an organizational policy aligned with the culture and values of the Mota-Engil Group, guarantee an orientation towards customers, shareholders and employees.
Manuel Costa

Manuel Costa has a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management and a MBA from AESE / IESE. He started his career at Mota-Engil Engineering in 2002 managing the technical and operational areas. He then worked for a year in Angola where he was responsible for the human resources department. In 2015, he joined SUMA, which he now presides, serving on the boards of directors of Mota-Engil Industry and Innovation, as well as in Manuel António da Mota Foundation.
Sergio Padilha

Sérgio Padilha, graduated in Economics in 1997 and participated in the Strategic Management Program at Northwestern University – Kellogg School of Management and Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics (2015). He joined Mota & Companhia in 1998 and has held leadership positions in the Mota-Engil Group in the areas of Finance, Innovation, Corporate Information Systems and Corporate Finance. Between 2016 and 2024, he became CEO of Mota-Engil Global. Appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Mota-Engil Ambiente e Serviços in 2024, while simultaneously serving as Vice-Chairman and CFO of SUMA.
Carlos Garcez

Carlos Garcez is a Civil Engineer. He began his professional life as a construction site manager for several Portuguese construction companies. In 1993, he joined Mota and Companhia universe, as the manager of one of its companies, and, in 2005, he was appointed general manager of the Angolan branch of Mota-Engil, SA. As of 2008, he integrates SUMA as director, subsequently taking over the management of collection and cleaning services in Portugal as well as in Angola, Mozambique and Oman.

With a degree in Environmental Engineering, Nuno da Costa joined the Business Development department at SUMA in 2000, as the manager for the national market (Center, South and Islands), taking over, in 2016, the management of the Business Development department and, two years later, he was appointed Director of SUMA to develop new business opportunities.
Nuno Kol de Carvalho

Nuno Kol de Carvalho is a Mechanical Engineering graduate specializing in applied thermodynamics from Instituto Superior Técnico (1983 to 1988). He furthered his education by obtaining an MBA from the University of Macau/ISCTE (1994 to 1996), focusing his thesis on "Urban Solid Waste and Waste-to-Energy Technology". Additionally, he completed the PAGE – Advanced Management Program for Executives at the Portuguese Catholic University in 1998. Has held significant roles in esteemed organizations such as SOMAGUE, CESL-ASIA Macau, ASCENDI, and SUMA. Since 2023, he has served as the Business Development Director at Mota-Engil Ambiente e Serviços, a subsidiary of the Mota-Engil Group dedicated to environmental services. Furthermore, beginning in 2024, Nuno has assumed a pivotal position as a member of the SUMA Board.
